A book about sharing colds and viruses by accident. The gift no one wants is to get sick with a cold or the flu. This book teaches kids about germs and virues and includes fun diagrams, questions and statistics for parents to share with their kids to teach them about virues. Parent and kids will discover why we can get “gifts”, like the flu, that make us feel sick and what we can do to prevent getting them or giving them to others.

This is a cute story with scientific facts at the end about the flu. All three of my children from 7 to 9 liked the book. For teachers in elementary schools, this is a good book to read to the class then have the students take one of the 13 facts and present it to the class. Good science project to learn about flu virus.

I read A Gift You Don’t Want with my daughters and was immediately connected to the story and illustrations. The author (a retired pediatrician) does an excellent job of conveying knowledge about the flu with an alliterative storytelling style that thoroughly entertained my daughters. Additionally, the illustrations are very accessible and bring the story to life with humor and honesty that are a very positive addition to the story. Providing flu facts and discussion topics in the back of the book spurred an informative discussion about the spread of germs, while offering the reader an opportunity to contribute to their own experience of the story by drawing their interpretation of a germ. All in all, a thoroughly entertaining book on an important topic in disease prevention. I recommend it very highly.
